To make a day of it
Jagdschloss Windhof stands in Weilburg (Landkreis Limburg-Weilburg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Jagdschloss Windhof stands on a plateau above Weilburg in Hesse, set apart from the old town yet deliberately aligned in sight with Schloss Weilburg. Its appearance is unexpectedly fortress like, with corner pavilions and a parapet wall reflecting the military background of architect Julius Ludwig Rothweil, even though the overall layout and gardens recall a baroque pleasure residence. The present building grew out of a farming estate first recorded in 1327 as Wynthusin, transformed into a hunting and pleasure lodge between 1713 and 1726. Its later history includes use as a school dormitory in the twentieth century, adding another layer to a site that has rarely stood still.
What to know
- The building is protected as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse.
- No verified information is available on opening hours, admission fees or visit duration, so check locally before planning a visit.
- The lodge stands on elevated ground outside Weilburg's town centre, requiring a walk or short drive to reach it.
- Much of the interest lies in the exterior architecture, the corner pavilions and enclosing wall, best appreciated with some knowledge of its farming and later school history.
