To make a day of it
Burgruine Freienfels stands in Weinbach (Landkreis Limburg-Weilburg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgruine Freienfels overlooks the Weil valley near Weinbach, perched on a rocky spur that once guarded the approach to the town of Weilburg. Built at the end of the 13th century, likely by the counts of Diez-Weilnau, it passed through several hands over the centuries, most notably the von Schönborn family, who held it for almost 250 years. Never destroyed by war, the castle fell gradually into ruin before being stabilised in the early 20th century under Prussian administration. Visitors today can climb the stone keep and walk among the remains of its double defensive walls and the deep ditch that once protected its southern side.
