Burg Odenhausen is a moated castle in Berkum, part of the municipality of Wachtberg, which began as an 11th century motte before being enlarged in the Middle Ages into a fortified site with an outer and inner bailey. In 1560 Ludwig von Blankart had the complex rebuilt in Renaissance style. Visitors can see a bridge crossing the outer moat leading through a Baroque gate bearing a coat of arms into the courtyard, and a further bridge across the moat to the two-winged manor house, whose main façade features a projecting bay with a late Gothic tracery oriel and two volute gables.
What to know
- The castle has been privately inhabited by the owning family since 2005, which limits access to the interior.
- Visits are mainly from the outside, taking in the bridges, gate and façades from around the moat.
- With no opening hours or admission fees published, it is best approached as a site to view from outside rather than a formally organised visit.
- The castle is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
- It stands in Berkum, a district of Wachtberg, next to a newer residential development.
