Located in Wachtberg, in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, Burg Münchhausen is the oldest fortified site in the municipality, first recorded in 893 in the Prüm Abbey land register. Of the original moated stronghold built on a rounded plan in the 12th and 13th centuries, what remains includes a three-storey residential hall, two towers among them the keep, and a gate tower, both raised by an extra floor toward the end of the 13th century. The outer wall of the gate tower still shows the blocked pointed arch of a former carriage passage, alongside an 18th-century house built onto the medieval remains. The grounds now house an equestrian centre and a restaurant.
