To make a day of it

Burg Neuhewen stands in Engen (Landkreis Konstanz), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The ruins of Burg Neuhewen crown the highest point of the Hegau region, north of the hamlet of Stetten, within the town of Engen. Built in the 12th century by the lords of Hewen, it later passed to the Habsburgs, then to the counts of Hohenberg, before belonging to the Reischach and finally the Fürstenberg families. Destroyed by Bavarian troops during the Thirty Years' War, it still shows an eleven-metre keep and sections of its trapezoidal main wall, along with the outline of a shield-shaped outer bailey.

What to know

  • The site has no tourist infrastructure: no marked path and no signposted parking.
  • Fences and barbed wire now block entry to the ruins, though climbing the keep was still possible in the 1980s and up to around 2005.
  • A visit is therefore limited to viewing the ruins from outside, on a hilltop setting in the Hegau region.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or accessibility arrangements for this site.
