Klusenstein Castle stands on a sixty-metre cliff above the Hönne valley, within the town of Hemer. Built in 1353 by Gerhard von Plettenberg on behalf of the Earl of Mark, it marked the border between that earldom, the Electorate of Cologne and the earldom of Arnsberg. It withstood a siege in 1366 and lost its strategic role once Arnsberg was sold to the Archbishop of Cologne. The complex, now owned by the company Rheinkalk, includes the fortified house, farm buildings and the remains of the defensive ditch and earthwork.
