Burg Holtzbrinck stands in the historic centre of Altena, known as the town's oldest burgher house despite its castle-like appearance. First recorded in 1643, when the receiver and Freigraf Georg Holtzbrinck purchased it, the building took on much of its present form through alterations carried out by his son Stephan Johann between 1673 and 1689. Acquired by the town of Altena in 1972, it now functions as a community and event venue, fronted by a rococo-style garden laid out above an underground car park.
