To make a day of it

Burg Ilow II stands in Neuburg (Landkreis Nordwestmecklenburg), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Ilow II is a vanished early Slavic hillfort in the forest known as the 'Altes Holz', near the hamlet of Madsow in the municipality of Neuburg. Nothing remains of any structures: only a flat, roughly circular plateau some hundred metres across, set on a hilltop protected on three sides by steep slopes and on the fourth by earthen ramparts, still hints at the former size of the site. It is regarded as the predecessor of the nearby Burg Ilow, located 1.3 kilometres to the west, which is why it is sometimes also called 'Burg Ilow' or 'Höhenburg Ilow'. No historical name for the site survives; it was the prehistorian Robert Beltz who gave it the designation 'Ilow II' in 1924.

What to know

  • No masonry or visible structure remains, only a grassy plateau at the top of a wooded hill.
  • The site lies within a forest, away from roads, so reaching it requires some walking.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as this is an open archaeological site rather than a managed monument.
  • The hilltop location with steep slopes calls for a degree of fitness and sturdy footwear.
