To make a day of it

Burgwall Schlemmin stands in Bernitt (Landkreis Rostock), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgwall Schlemmin is a former Slavic hillfort located on the highest point of the Lange Berg, away from the village of Bernitt. The earthworks, dated to the 7th to 9th centuries, formed a refuge stronghold built on high ground, a method typical of Slavic settlements of that era. The site today is an archaeological landscape in woodland, with no standing structures, but the earthen ramparts remain visible in the terrain. Nearby, in the Schlemmin forest, several burial mounds and a so-called sacrificial stone can also be found.

What to know

  • The site lies in woodland, about two kilometres southwest of Bernitt, reached on foot.
  • No standing structures remain, only the earthwork relief in the terrain.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as it is an open outdoor site.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable given the forest paths and uneven ground.
  • Nearby burial mounds and a sacrificial stone in the same forest can be visited as well.
