To make a day of it
Schloss Kaarz stands in Weitendorf (Landkreis Ludwigslust-Parchim), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Kaarz stands at Weitendorf, in the Landkreis Ludwigslust-Parchim, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This neoclassical manor house was built in 1872 for the Hamburg shipowner Julius Hüniken, designed by the architects Friedrich Saniter and Albrecht Becker, on an estate that had existed since the 17th century. Its most notable feature is a monopteros-style tower with an original cast-iron spiral staircase, set within an English landscape park laid out from 1873 by Carl Ansorge, which hides a neo-Gothic chapel belonging to the von Bülow family and a neo-Renaissance mausoleum of the Hüniken family. The building, now run as a hotel, café and restaurant, passed through very different uses during the 20th century, including a school, a refugee shelter, and a retirement home until 1988.
What to know
- The Schloss today houses a hotel, a café and a restaurant, which shapes how the interior can be visited.
- The landscape park surrounding the building is open to visitors and can be walked through freely.
- Very little original interior decoration survives, apart from the fireplace in the red salon and the ceiling paintings in the foyer.
- The Hüniken family mausoleum and the von Bülow neo-Gothic chapel are tucked away within the park rather than along a marked route.
- The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
