The Brandensteinsches Palais stands in the Schelfstadt, the historic quarter of Schwerin that developed from the 11th century and was incorporated into the city in 1832. This two storey, eleven bay building, originally late Baroque before taking on a classicist appearance, takes its name from August Georg von Brandenstein, a minister of Mecklenburg-Schwerin who bought it around 1797 and renewed its interior. Its monumental facade is now the only surviving example in Schwerin of this type of aristocratic town palace.
