Güstrow Castle stands in Güstrow, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, on the site of an earlier Slavic stronghold and later a castle of the princes of Werle. Built from 1558 onward for Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg, it ranks among the finest Renaissance buildings in northern Germany and has kept much of its original appearance, unlike Schwerin Palace, which was reworked in the 19th century. Visitors today find rooms with stucco ceilings, a preserved theatre, collections of hunting and ceremonial weapons, and paintings by Cranach, Marten de Vos and Tintoretto. The imperial general Wallenstein briefly held court here as Duke of Mecklenburg between 1628 and 1630.
