To make a day of it

Mecklenburg stands in Dorf Mecklenburg (Landkreis Nordwestmecklenburg), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Mecklenburg no longer exists as a building; the name refers to the ancient circular rampart (Burgwall) at Dorf Mecklenburg, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This archaeological site, believed to date back to the late 7th or early 8th century, was once a principal seat of the Obodrite princes and gave its name to the entire Mecklenburg region. Visitors can still see a large oval, tree-covered earthwork, which has enclosed a cemetery since 1870.

What to know

  • No medieval building remains standing; the site consists of an oval earthen rampart, not a fortress structure.
  • The rampart measures roughly 234 by 185 metres and rises up to 12.75 metres above the surrounding meadows.
  • A cemetery has occupied the interior of the former stronghold since 1870, which should guide visitor behaviour on site.
  • The location can be visited freely outdoors, with no known opening hours or admission fee.
  • It lies at Dorf Mecklenburg, between Wismar and Lake Schwerin.
