To make a day of it

Burg Hohenheim stands in Hohenheim (Stuttgart), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Hohenheim Castle was the ancestral seat of a medieval family, the Bombast von Hohenheim, whose most famous member was the physician and philosopher Paracelsus. Nothing of the original stronghold remains visible today, as it was destroyed during the seventeenth century and later replaced first by a baroque mansion and then by Schloss Hohenheim. Excavations carried out in the 1970s uncovered buried remains of the former fortification. The site is therefore best understood as a place of historical interest rather than a castle to tour.

What to know

  • No visible structure of the medieval castle remains; only the site itself can be identified.
  • The location corresponds today to that of Schloss Hohenheim in Stuttgart.
  • Archaeological remains were uncovered during excavations in the 1970s, but are not on permanent public display.
