To make a day of it

Burg Eichelsheim stands in Mannheim (Mannheim), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 14th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Eichelsheim was a toll fortress built on the banks of the Rhine, on the site of what is now the Lindenhof district of Mannheim. Founded in the 14th century on a location already recorded as a customs post in 1265, it long served to control river traffic and even housed a coin mint. Destroyed several times during the wars that swept through the region, it has now vanished entirely from the landscape. Only a reconstructed piece of wall and a commemorative plaque mark its former location by the river.

What to know

  • No visible remains of the fortress survive on site today.
  • A reconstructed memorial wall and a plaque mark its former location on the Stephanienufer in Mannheim.
  • A sign along the Lindenhof historical trail sets out the site's chronology.
  • The street Eichelsheimer Straße in the Lindenhof district preserves the name of the former stronghold.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or organized tours, since the building itself no longer exists.
