Schloss Mannheim is a sprawling baroque residence, among the largest palaces in Europe, marked by its huge courtyard of honour and a facade running over four hundred metres. Built for the prince-electors of the Palatinate, the building covers some six hectares in the centre of the city. Visitors can see the Rittersaal, a state apartment once used for official receptions, along with a room devoted to the Mannheim school of music. The electress's library, normally closed to the public, is now accessible through a virtual reality experience.
