To make a day of it
Burg Aremberg stands in Aremberg (Landkreis Ahrweiler), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
On the wooded summit of the Aremberg, an extinct volcano of the Eifel rising to 624 metres, lie the scattered remains of a stronghold whose history far outweighs what survives of it today. Founded in the 12th century, it was the seat of a small lordship whose ruling family, the Arenbergs, rose through the ranks to become dukes at the Viennese court. What remains now is a moat, sections of wall, bastions from the former fortress and a dozen lime trees planted in what was once the castle garden. A 19th-century lookout tower, built from stones taken from the ruins, still stands on the site but is closed to visitors.
