The Blücherschanze is a lunette-type field fortification perched above the Lahn on the northern edge of the Taunus, near Ennerich. Built by Austrian troops in 1796 during the Coalition Wars, it was meant to watch over the mouth of the Kerkerbach valley and help shield Frankfurt am Main from the French army then stationed in the Westerwald. The earthworks still show the outline of its faces, flanks and rear rampart, and a memorial erected in 1926 marks the grave of 250 Prussian soldiers who died in 1813 and were buried in the fortification's rear ditch.
