To make a day of it

Bischöfliche Burg Bruchsal stands in Bruchsal (Landkreis Karlsruhe), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Of the Bischöfliche Burg Bruchsal, an episcopal stronghold founded in the late twelfth century by the bishops of Speyer, only one structure still stands: the square keep, the oldest surviving building in the town. A visit today is therefore limited to this tower, which has been fitted out as a viewing platform, while the former castle grounds were later built over with a municipal community centre. The site carries traces of a turbulent past, notably the Peasants' War of 1525, when the town was seized by insurgents and then retaken, with some of the captured rebels held in the keep's dungeon.

What to know

  • Only the fourteenth-century keep, standing 38 metres high, remains visible today.
  • An attached outdoor staircase leads to the top of the tower, which has been converted into a viewing point.
  • The rest of the former stronghold disappeared beneath Bruchsal's community centre, built after archaeological excavations carried out between 1980 and 1982.
  • No opening hours, fees or access conditions are specified for the tower, so it is worth checking locally beforehand.
