To make a day of it

Barockschloss Neschwitz stands in Neschwitz (Landkreis Bautzen), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 18th century. Adult admission costs 4 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Located in the Landkreis Bautzen, some fifteen kilometres from Bautzen, the Barockschloss Neschwitz stands on the site of a medieval moated castle, whose vaulted cellars still survive beneath the present building. The structure seen today, with its pilaster-articulated baroque façade and mansard roof, dates from the sweeping 1721 rebuilding commissioned by Prince Friedrich Ludwig von Württemberg-Winnental, who had the house raised on an artificial mound five metres high. The surrounding park, laid out in the French formal style by Dresden architect Johann Friedrich Karcher, follows precise axes linking the palace to the so-called Blue Gate and to the village church. Sandstone sculptures on the side walls, including figures of Adonis and Venus, were created by Johann Benjamin Thomae, a pupil of Permoser.

What to know

  • The palace is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Saxony.
  • The building sits on an artificial mound, so the surrounding park involves some uneven ground.
  • The vaulted cellars of the earlier medieval moated castle can still be seen beneath the baroque structure.
  • The surrounding French-style park covers about five and a half hectares, linking the palace to the Blue Gate and the village church.
