In Aurich, in Lower Saxony, the Schloss stands on a site that has seen several successive buildings since the Middle Ages. The structure visible today dates from the mid-19th century, built under the direction of architect Ernst Heinrich Blohm on the foundations of an earlier fortress raised by the Frisian count Ulrich Cirksena in 1448. The site was first the seat of Frisian chieftains, then the residence of the counts and princes of East Frisia, before becoming an administrative center under successive powers, Prussian, Dutch, French and later Hanoverian. The current building now houses administrative offices and a regional court.
