To make a day of it

Altenburg stands in Schöllkrippener Forst (Landkreis Aschaffenburg), in Bavaria, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Altenburg, also known as Alte Burg, is the site of a former medieval hilltop fortification on the Reuschberg hill in the Spessart forest, east of Schöllkrippen. What remains today is a Burgstall, a former castle site encircled by an earthen ring wall, the standing stone walls still visible in the early twentieth century having been stripped away by stone robbers in the 1960s. Visitors come less for a standing building than for a wooded site where the shape of the ground still traces the vanished stronghold.

What to know

  • No standing walls remain, only an earthen ring wall and ditch mark the former fortification's outline.
  • The site sits in forest on top of the Reuschberg hill and is reached via a forest track, meaning a walk on foot is required.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open-air archaeological site rather than a managed monument.
  • The exact origin of the earthworks is debated, excavations in 2005 ruled out a Celtic date in favor of a medieval one, around the 11th or 12th century.
  • The terrain slopes steeply in places, especially on the north side of the Reuschberg, so some physical effort is needed to reach it.
