Château-Renaud stands in Germigny-l'Exempt (Cher), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
Rebuilt around 1683 in Germigny-l'Exempt in Cher, Château-Renaud stands on the site of a medieval fortress. Erected for Bernard Briçonnet d'Oizonville, likely by Joseph Lingré, this classified monument blends classical symmetry with defensive features: a main body flanked by round towers at the corners, a chapel housed in a north-west tower, a portal decorated with continuous bosses and an armorial pediment. The whole sits within a rectangular platform surrounded by moats, reached by a bridge with recesses.
What to know
- The castle and its outbuildings have been protected as historical monuments since 1989, including the moats, two bridges and the interior grand staircase.
- The facades, roofs, the chapel housed in the north-west tower and the entrance portal are the main elements visible from outside.
- The north wing underwent extensive restoration in the 19th century, along with the windows and interior decoration of the castle.
- The south-west tower, of which only the base remains, was apparently never completed according to historical records.
