On the Elsberg plateau above Ottrott, the Vieux-Lutzelbourg stands alongside its neighbours, the Rathsamhausen and the Lutzelbourg, forming a cluster of medieval ruins divided by a ditch. Excavations uncovered the foundations of an earlier stronghold dating from before 1076, later rebuilt by the Hohenstaufen dynasty and burned down in 1198. Visitors mainly come to take in the layout of three adjoining castles that trace centuries of feudal rivalry in Alsace.
