What the French Ministry of Culture records

Herman de Courteilles prend possession, en 1824, de la propriété donnée par ses parents et réaménage les bâtiments et le parc du Petit Bois. Il fonde parallèlement, en 1839, la Colonie agricole et pénitentiaire de Mettray dont il semble avoir utilisé la main-d'oeuvre pour effectuer les travaux de terrassement et d'aménagement du parc, celui-ci devenant ainsi le champ d'application de l'enseignement dispensé à la Colonie. La construction des communs de style italianisant parait être également l'oeuvre de l'architecte de la Colonie, Abel Blouet. Un temps abandonné, le parc a retrouvé, à l'initiative des nouveaux propriétaires, sa structure et ses circulations ainsi que les différents éléments pittoresques qui le composaient: belvédères, étang, ponts, etc.
