At the mouth of the Florival valley in the Haut-Rhin, the ruined Hugstein Castle marks the border separating Buhl from Guebwiller. It was raised in the 13th century to protect Murbach Abbey, and a ten-metre-wide cylindrical keep, uncommon for the area, still rises above the site. The curtain wall's rounded corners were designed to trick attackers into believing round towers stood there. A 15th century gatehouse that once held a drawbridge also remains visible.
