Set on a rocky outcrop in the Bas-Rhin, this fortified castle dates back to the 12th century and overlooks the Alsace plain from the heights above Orschwiller. Ruined during the Thirty Years' War, it was fully rebuilt in the early 20th century on the orders of Emperor Wilhelm II, who wanted it restored to its supposed late-medieval appearance. Visitors today find armouries, early 1900s painted decoration, and wide views over the Vosges and the Rhine valley. It is one of the most visited monuments in the region, both a medieval remnant and a major restoration project.
