Standing above 500 metres on the heights over Ribeauvillé, Girsberg castle is one of three fortified sites overlooking the town, alongside Saint-Ulrich and Haut-Ribeaupierre. Visitors find a pentagonal keep dating from the 13th century, the best-preserved part of a stronghold built by the Ribeaupierre lords and later held in fief by the Girsberg knights. The ruined living quarters and outer bailey, set against the bare rock, reflect the successive building phases before the site was abandoned in the 17th century.
