Standing on a terrace above the Nièvre countryside, the château de Saulières, in Saint-Péreuse, is a late 18th century residence built in the neo-Palladian taste fashionable in Paris at the time. A private property, it retains its original interior, woodwork, parquet floors, printed cotton hangings and panoramic wallpaper in the billiard room, altered during 19th century works. Around the main building stand the remains of an older medieval château with a round tower, a 19th century chapel housing a tomb, and terraced gardens leading down to the former stables.
