What the French Ministry of Culture records
Le château est implanté dans un site intact du Morvan, au milieu d'étangs et de vallons boisés. On y accède par une longue allée d'arbres qui mène à la façade remodelée au 17e siècle. Le château construit au 14e siècle fut dévasté par les Grandes Compagnies, les Anglais et la Guerre de Cent Ans. De l'époque médiévale date le puissant donjon carré. Le château est reconstruit à la fin du 16e siècle par les Bourbon ; il est pourvu d'un décor de tapisseries des Gobelins et d'Aubusson au 17e siècle, puis de boiseries au 18e siècle. La chapelle, de plan carré, logée au rez-de-chaussée du donjon, est couverte de peintures murales du 17e siècle. En 1793, le château a été vandalisé et une aile a été détruite au nord-est.
