In Bazoches, in the Morvan region, the hamlet of Vauban keeps a 12th century fortified house that once watched over the road between Vézelay and Lormes. Several lordly families held the estate before it passed, at the end of the 16th century, to the Le Prestre family, from whom Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban descended. He bought the land back in 1684 to join it with the nearby estate of Bazoches, which he already owned. Visitors come here mainly for the family history behind the famous military engineer rather than for grand architecture.
