Standing at the entrance to the walled city of Saint-Malo, this castle was built by the dukes of Brittany to keep control over the town, from the Great Keep raised in 1424 to the towers added at the end of the 15th century. Its horseshoe-shaped layout, watch turrets and crenellated wall-walk reflect an architecture designed for defence, long before the building came to house the town's history museum. Traces of successive military alterations remain visible, from Vauban's bastions to the 18th-century barracks.
