What the French Ministry of Culture records
Une charte de 1135 mentionne le château. La légende veut que Richard Coeur de Lion l'ait visité ou habité lors de l'occupation de Moissac par les Anglais. Une partie de ce château serait son oeuvre. Une tour carrée (donjon) existait. Elle fut démolie en 1849 pour approprier ce château à la gendarmerie qui s'y installa. Aymeric de Peyrac y écrivit sa chronique de Moissac à la fin du 14e siècle. De plan rectangulaire, l'édifice se compose d'une cour ouverte au sud, autrefois fermée, et de trois corps de bâtiments formant un corps de logis au nord et deux ailes. La grosse tour démolie se situait à l'angle sud-est de la cour. L'aile ouest aurait été bâtie par Bertrand de Montaigu. A chacun de ses angles extérieurs s'élève une tour. Le grand mur qui les relie a été percé à plusieurs reprises depuis le 17e siècle, dénaturant l'aspect primitif. Au sommet des tours s'ouvrent deux portes donnant accès au chemin de ronde. L'ensemble remonterait à la deuxième moitié du 13e siècle. L'aile Est présente un caractère défensif, en dépit des aménagements ultérieurs.
