To make a day of it

Château de Vissec stands in Vissec (Gard), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second half of the 13th century, fourth quarter of the 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château de Vissec stands in the village of the same name, on the slopes of the causse, in the Gard department. Its history goes back to the late 13th century, when a first castrum was recorded there, but the building seen today results from a 17th-century reconstruction after the medieval fortress was torn down by troops of the Duke of Rohan. It features a doorway decorated with mouldings imitating Doric capitals, an interior staircase with a double ramp, and, upstairs, a drawing room whose painted panels show landscapes framed by garlands of fruit.

What to know

  • The château has been listed as a historic monument since 2009, protecting both the ruins of the old castrum and the 17th-century seigneurial residence.
  • The building belongs to a family who reunited its two sections after more than a century of division, making it a private property.
  • No verified information on opening hours, admission fees or organised visits is available.
  • The site is located within the village of Vissec, on the steep terrain typical of the causse.
