To make a day of it

Château de Montdardier stands in Montdardier (Gard), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: third quarter of the 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Standing on a hilltop above the Glèpe valley, at the meeting point of the Cévennes and the Causse de Blandas, the château de Montdardier owes its present appearance to a reconstruction carried out around 1860 by Viollet-le-Duc for Fernand de Ginestous. Behind this neo-medieval silhouette lies a fortified site dating back to the 12th century, repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt through the wars that swept the region. A 15th-century tower and foundations set directly on the bedrock still bear witness to that turbulent past.
