L'étude du domaine est lié à la découverte de plans dans le fonds privé des héritiers Carlier, numérisé par la maison de l'Architecture du Languedoc-Roussillon. Les archives de la famille conservent de nombreux plans des aménagements postérieurs et des photographies de chantier. Le château construit par les comtes de Mareilles dans le dernier quart du 18e siècle est connu par une lithographie. Louis Carlier oriente le château vers le sud pour l'ouvrir sur le paysage et le tourner vers la ville. Pour cela, il aménage une large terrasse bordée de balustres moulées qui font écho à celles qui cachent la toiture et elle est soutenue par deux grandes serres.
