Standing on a hill above the Douve marshes, the Château de Plain-Marais retains the look of a medieval stronghold reshaped in the 17th century along Vauban-style lines. Corner towers with bartizans, dry stone-lined moats and a bastioned platform form a defensive ensemble that has survived largely intact. The chapel and guardroom are open to visitors, along with the grounds, in a setting still occupied by the owning family.
