What the French Ministry of Culture records

Dès la fin du 9e siècle, il existe probablement une forteresse ; la première mention certaine apparaît en 1225, date à laquelle Renaud de Montfaucon fortifie le château ; en 1361, occupation anglaise ; en 1412, le château d'Orval ayant été brûlé par les anglais, Charles d'Albret, seigneur d'Orval et de Saint-Amand, s'installe au château de Montrond, mieux protégé ; d'importants travaux ont lieu pendant le 15e siècle et au début 16e siècle ; une chapelle pour Isabeau de La Tour du Pin est fondée à la fin du 15e siècle ; en 1606, le château est acquis par le duc de Sully ; les bâtiments étant très délabrés, Sully réaménage le logis, crée le jardin, reprend les fortifications ; de 1621 à 1652, les fortifications sont achevées pour Henri II de Condé et son fils Louis II, le Grand Condé, par Jean Sarrazin, architecte ; en 1652 a lieu le siège de Montrond ; le château est démantelé à partir de 1736, puis sert de carrière ; en 1834, Montrond est transformé en jardin public ; en 1970, un chantier de fouilles confié au CHASA est ouvert.
