What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château de Montbrun fut construit pour défendre la vallée du Mars. Il a été le siège d'une importante seigneurie durant tout le Moyen Age et a appartenu à la même famille, les Montclar, jusqu'en 1789. Après une destruction par les Espagnols en 1452, il est immédiatement reconstruit. En 1683, un état des lieux décrit le château avec un donjon crénelé et plusieurs tours. L'intérieur est très bien meublé avec une salle d'archive. En 1756, le château est abandonné, le seigneur de Montclar s'installant dans le château de la Trémolière. Montbrun commence à se dégrader ; en 1789, il est partiellement ruiné et ne contient plus aucun meuble. Le logis fut reconstruit au début du 19e siècle ; l'essentiel du décor intérieur date du 19e siècle.
