At Ahun, in the Creuse department, Massenon castle preserves traces of a fortified residence built in 1482 by Mathurin Barton de Montbas. Visitors can see a machicolated porch, a square stair tower, and two round towers that were cut down during the French Revolution. Inside, a second-floor room retains 16th-century monochrome paintings depicting mythological scenes framed by geometric friezes. An 18th-century wing, set at a right angle to the older building, completes an estate held by the same family until 1789.
