Straddling the boundary between Mainsat and La Serre-Bussière-Vieille, Chaumont is not an old fortress but a Louis XIII-style residence built in 1886, long absent from tourist itineraries. Its past combines the social life of a Paris Opera singer with the wartime sheltering of Jewish children, before a fire left it in ruins in 1986. Since 2022 a British owner has been rebuilding it by hand and sharing the progress online, so the site is best approached today as a restoration in progress rather than a finished monument.
