Château de Saint-Maixant stands in Saint-Maixant (Creuse), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first quarter of the 14th century, first quarter of the 15th century). What the French Ministry of Culture records

Saint-Maixant fut d'abord une seigneurie ayant haute, moyenne et basse justice, dépendant de la châtellenie d'Aubusson. Elle devint marquisat en 1615. En 1270 s'y installa la branche cadette des La Roche Aymond. L'édifice actuel a probablement remplacé une ancienne forteresse. Il a été construit vers la fin du 14e ou au début du 15e siècle. Son plan reprend celui de la plupart des châteaux de la Haute Marche : quadrilatère comprenant, à chacun des angles de la façade Est, deux tours rondes. Celle du sud a un diamètre supérieur, indiquant une possible reconstruction, d'autant que son chemin de ronde est plus bas que celui de la courtine. La façade ouest s'appuie sur une tour carrée en saillie, plus élevée que le corps de logis, et renfermant un escalier à vis de 120 marches. Un chemin de ronde commande toutes les murailles du logis et défend les trois tours. Il possède meurtrières et mâchicoulis. Les douves subsistent en partie, à l'est. A l'ouest, le château est précédé d'une cour d'honneur s'ouvrant par une grille du 17e siècle. A l'intérieur, les appartements ont été partiellement refaits au 18e siècle. Le rez-de-chaussée comporte deux pièces voûtées en berceau. La tour sud renferme une chapelle qui a été transformée. Quelques pièces ont conservé leurs cheminées de pierre et leurs boiseries du 18e siècle.
