Château d'Aubusson stands in Aubusson (Creuse), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. On the hill known as the Chapitre, overlooking Aubusson, stand the remains of a castle whose origins go back to the 11th century, built by local viscounts on a site already occupied in Roman times. Only a stretch of the south wall and part of the west wall survive, the last traces of a residential building erected between 1470 and 1475 by Jacques d'Armagnac, count of la Marche. Torn down in 1632 on Richelieu's orders to deny the Huguenots a military stronghold, the fortress later served as a stone quarry for the old town's houses. Visitors come today for the view over Aubusson and for the layered history the ruins reveal.
