The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 15th century, 17th century). Perched on a rocky spur above the Loire valley, the Château de Luynes retains the outline of a medieval stronghold, its tall round towers once watching over river traffic below. Its origins go back to the 11th century, though most of what survives today results from rebuilding in the 13th and 15th centuries. The Albert de Luynes family has owned the estate since purchasing it in 1619. The château has been closed to visitors since 2016, as it no longer meets public access requirements.
