What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château fut sans doute construit au 12e siècle. Au 14e siècle, il est complété par des fortifications par Louis de Culant, grand amiral de France. A partir du 16e siècle, l'édifice devient la propriété de la famille d'Albret, puis de celle de Sully qui la vendit à Henri de Condé en 1603. Le château est vendu comme bien national à la Révolution. Le quadrilatère défensif que comportait le château-fort est aujourd'hui réduit au corps de logis bordant le ravin. Ce bâtiment était le seul qui comportait des salles habitables, les trois autres côtés qui encadraient la cour intérieure ne subsistant qu'à l'état de murs de fondations transformés en clôtures et séparations de jardins. Le corps de logis est flanqué de trois tours avec hourds sur l'extérieur et trois avant-corps rectangulaires contenant des escaliers et s'avançant vers la cour intérieure.
