To make a day of it

Château de Châtigny stands in Fondettes (Indre-et-Loire), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Gallo-romain, fourth quarter of the 15th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Châtigny Castle in Fondettes rests upon two distinct historical layers. Beneath it lies a third-century Roman villa. The fortress itself was raised in 1487, built around a closed courtyard with two wings at right angles, round towers, and a fortified gate. Its stone facades bear distinctive brick and stone checker patterns typical of late fifteenth-century work. Successive transformations from the classical period through the nineteenth century enlarged windows and reshaped interior spaces. A landscaped park extends to the west and north of the structure.

What to know

  • Listed as a historical monument since 2006, the castle does not appear among regularly open-to-public sites.
  • The Roman-era remains and the original defensive structures are the most significant elements of the building.
  • The architecture combines medieval defense with successive alterations, including a terraced kitchen and neo-gothic outbuildings.
