To make a day of it

Château de Lupé stands in Lupé (Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 16th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

The Château de Lupé stands at the mouth of the Malleval gorges, on a rocky spur that once guarded the approach to the Pilat plateau. Built in the Middle Ages around a square keep dating from the 12th century, it took its present shape in the 15th century, forming an irregular polygon arranged around an inner courtyard. Later centuries added mullioned windows and Corinthian capitals, blending the original defensive character with more refined touches.
