At Pélussin, in the Loire department, the château de Virieu stands on a site documented since the Middle Ages, reshaped into a pleasure residence by Jean de Fay around the turn of the 17th century. The main building, flanked by two round towers, keeps a fortified appearance, reinforced at the end of the 19th century when the south-west tower was turned into a neo-medieval keep. A nearby chapel, with a doorway topped by a triangular pediment and a 17th-century inscription, completes the site.
