In the Loire department, between the Roannais and Beaujolais hills, the château de Saint-Marcel-de-Félines stands on the site of a fortified house recorded since the Middle Ages, rebuilt at the end of the 16th century after English troops destroyed it. Visitors come for the painted 17th-century woodwork, the French-style garden closed by a wrought-iron gate, and the two corner pavilions shaping the enclosed park. The whole estate, including outbuildings and the Forez gallery, remains a lived-in property kept by its owners.
