Château de Linoire stands in Turenne (Corrèze), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
A former defensive stronghold of the Viscounty of Turenne, Linoire Castle dates from the 15th century and retains the characteristics of a medieval fortified house. Built in two sections of unequal height, it is flanked by two dissimilar towers: a hexagonal tower on the south façade with a decoratively carved entrance featuring an ogival arch, and a circular tower overlooking a ravine to the north. The interior pink and white stone spiral staircase and the former Flamboyant Gothic chapel, with its ribbed vaults decorated with ring keystones, bear witness to the quality of the site's construction.
What to know
- The castle served as a fortified house from the 14th century onwards and housed, from 1522, a vicarage with its resident priest.
- The chapel, built in the 16th century, displays the Flamboyant Gothic style characteristic of that period.
- After the Viscounty was sold to the Crown in 1738, the castle declined in importance and one of its outbuildings was converted into a sheepfold in the 19th century.
- The façades, roofs and spiral staircase have been protected as historical monuments since 1987, while the chapel was listed in 1989.
